In Manila City, protestors battled with anti-riot police on Saturday in an attempt to cross Mendiola Bridge on the 52nd anniversary of the declaration of martial law.
Footage of a “police barricade” obstructing the demonstrators’ path was published by The Adamson Chronicle. Unable to get to Mendiola, the protesters put up a makeshift stage on Recto Avenue.
On the 52nd anniversary of martial law, activists from Southern Tagalog convened close to Welcome Rotonda to hold a demonstration.
A few of the organizers were chatting with responding police officers. The Buhay and EDSA Campaign Network will commemorate the day we surrendered our liberties to a martial law regime by holding a simultaneous candle-lighting campaign at various locations around the nation.
Proclamation 1081, which imposed martial law on the Philippines in 1972, resulted in 2,326 enforced disappearance victims and over 11,103 victims of human rights violations.
